Structured search vs actual operational questions
In most LIMS and ELN environments, search is limited to document metadata such as filename, author, and change date. The scientific knowledge organizations spent years creating in those documents is largely invisible during search.
Structured search returns:
“Here are ten documents.”
Scientists are searching for answers such as:
“Show me experiments which used SOPs mentioning hemoglobin handling on a Sysmex hematology analyzer in the last 3 years.”
Finding the right document is only the beginning. Scientists also need to understand how that document relates to experiments, methods, SOPs, CAPAs, and studies before deciding whether prior work applies.
Relationships provide context
Laboratory work is organized around connected experiments, methods, SOPs, CAPAs, studies, and other domain objects, not isolated PDF files. Those relationships provide the context needed to determine whether prior work applies to today's question.
Operational impact
Because conventional search treats documents as independent files rather than connected laboratory knowledge, it cannot convey the context needed to support informed decisions. This shows up as time spent unknowingly re-deriving prior work, decisions made without the benefit of relevant institutional knowledge, and planning with a less informed picture of what the organization already knows.
